Today, lets talk about emotions in dreams and if they matter.

I received a question from a fellow dreamer. I believe we can look at three different related questions to try to get an understanding.

  • What do emotions in a dream mean?

  • How do we interpret them?

  • How do they effect the interpretation of the rest of the dream?

Personally, in the majority of dreams that I have, I have very little emotional response. However, In one dream I had a very important body part removed at an earlier time, and I was back for the 2nd procedure. At that moment, I realized that the first procedure had already taken place. I was fine with it in the dream. When I woke up, I was horrified. It took me a long time to shake the emotions off, after I woke from the dream.

What do the emotions mean?

  • In this case, the emotion in the dream is everything.

  • Obviously I should not be fine with losing this body part, so the emotion of acceptance, and it not being a problem, is telling me something.

  • The rest of the dream, needs to be interpreted based on this illogical reaction.

I have many books on Dream Interpretation and most of them spend little or no time on the subject of emotions. However, one author, Praying Medic (Dave Hayes) has a section devoted to this subject. What follows are quotes and paraphrases, from this section. I also included his dream example, from “Dream Interpretation Made Simple” by Praying Medic

  1. When witnessing an event in waking life your emotions can mess up your perspective, and memory of the facts of the event… In Dream Interpretation, the opposite is true. The emotion is the key to the interpretation.

  2. After I record a dream I first ask myself, what is the dominant emotion that I feel?

  3. The emotion you feel in the dream, not after the dream is the important emotion. If the emotion in the dream is opposite to what it would be when you are awake, this will be a major key to the interpretation.

  4. Dave’s Dream: Several years ago, I had a dream where I killed an older man who lived down the street from me. In the dream we were friends and did many things together. I did not know this man in real life. In the dream I knew he had to die, so I poisoned him and left him alone at his house. I felt sadness over killing him, but that emotion quickly turned to a profound sense of peace.

Dave’s commentary on his interpretation.

Symbology:

  • The first clue that this is symbolic is that Dave does not know the man in waking life.

  • The second clue was his emotional response being off. Guilt and remorse would have been a normal, or expected response. Therefor this dream is not to be taken literally.

  • Profound peace is the opposite of a typical emotional response.

This is Key:

  • The positive emotion that you feel during a tragedy in your dream is a sign that the dream is POSITIVE.

  • Example: If your city is being destroyed in your dream and you are happy, the dream maybe talking about the old system or way of doing business is being replaced for something new. The old is being dismantled or destroyed.

  • Instead of looking at, the rational, in a dream, follow the emotions and let them lead you. Again, this is the opposite of what you should do when you are awake.

A Last comment from Dave:

  • Some dreams are devoid of emotions. These dreams are usually not difficult to interpret.

My two cents: As I said most of my dreams are lacking emotion. I would disagree with Dave’s statement above for me personally.

  • I believe that the this may be due to the uniqueness of each person and dreamer.

  • Many of my dreams are parables and metaphoric, or down right weird and disjionted. I find it hard to interpret many of these.

  • It also may be due to the fact that Dave is better at this than I am. His prophetic maturity is far above mine, at the moment. He maybe able to run right through my dream journal and point out things that I don’t see, very easily.

  • Either way, give yourself some slack if you don’t have the same results as someone else. This is a journey. A long journey.

End of Dave’s material.

Dreams with no noticeable emotions.

I will summarize what I have found in many of my non-emotional dreams.

  1. Many times I will get a hodgepodge of short dreams that are words, phrases or objects or people that just seem like I am watching 12 movies at the same time. I feel like I just need to roll over, go back to sleep and not record any of it. If I did that, which I have on occasion, I would miss out on some great communications from the Lord.

  2. Many times when I read my morning scriptures, or evening scriptures, or when I read the days posting from Elijah List, or My utmost for his highest, or Kenneth Copeland’s daily posting, or a scripture shared by a friend, the Lord brings me back to the hodgepodge and starts to show me how to put the puzzle together. It is wild. so, write everything, its fun and keeps you in God’s Word constantly, all day, everyday.

  3. Take names of people and write down the meaning of the name.

  4. Write down peoples occupation.

  5. Write down what you think of these people, whether celebrity or friend, etc.

  6. Things that seem historical, go digging and learn something about the history.

  7. Search the Bible for the meaning of colors, and places, and people, and terms.

  8. All of these things and more, untangle the hogde from the podge, and you are one step closer to seeing what lies beneath the surface.

In summary, I don’t know that there is much to say, in a general sense, other than the above.

If you want to share examples we can look at them together on our Dream Forum Group on facebook.

If you prefer you can email me and I can look at your dreams that way. Please let me know if you want me to, or do not want me to, use these in future postings for teaching.

Some things to consider.

  1. Recording your dreams as soon as you wake is key.

  2. Write down everything

  • Colors

  • Names

  • Objects that stand out

  • Emotions (if any)

  1. After the fact you can write down whether you know these people in real life or other details.

  2. You will also recall things you did not write down when you woke, even years later.

  3. Record it all, useful or not.
