In this issue we have two dreams submitted by a Pastor of a “New” church who currently pastors an “older church” as well. To add another layer to the message that this dream is trying to communicate, this same Pastor, pastors the “Older Church” in “The Old Way”, similar to the first century church and its description in the book of Acts. However, in the “New Church” a more modern or traditional approach to how the gathering of the saints unfolds, is taken.
Lets look at this dream, as well as the second dream, and see if we can understand what the Lord is saying. (The dreamer is also referred to as the Pastor in the following)
Dream 1
I had a dream about the church. In the dream all the windows in the church had their frames rotting out. They looked okay unless you look closely. Then you saw that all the woodwork was rotted out and it is allowing air inside. There was then a wall that attached a new addition to the old part of the church. It had a big gap at the top of it that just let air from outside blow right in. We were heating the outside.
Dream 2
In another dream I was seeking to become a superhero version of myself. I knew there was a way to become this supercharged Force for good, but I couldn't seem to cross over. I could see an image of myself all bulked up and superheroed out, but I wasn't there yet. I wasn't sure how I would get there. It was like the image of myself was a far off. I was dressed in all white and really muscular, almost like the hulk.
Dream 1 Elements
“The Church” - ‘The Church is the dreamers church. He feels attached to and has taken responsibility for it, ownership of it.
Windows - Windows allow us to see what is on the other side of a wall/barrier. This could be a view into the supernatural from the natural. Also, maybe it is a view from the present into the future.
Window Frame - A window frame defines the dimensions, or the scope of what will be seen through this window. It is also the supporting structure of the view that the window supplies.
Gap between Old and New - The New is not in alignment with the Old and it is causing loss.
what is inside is leaking out and
what is outside is affecting what is inside.
Dream 2 Elements
Superhero - This is the Ultimate version of yourself. A Glorified version of self.
Seeking - Desire, searching out
Dressed in White - mantled in righteousness.
Psalm 24 … He will receive righteousness from the God of our salvation…
Image far off - In the dream the Dreamer believes this to be almost unreachable
Dream 1 Summary
In the first dream, The dreamer sees that things from the old, are not lining up with the new, and the scope of what was meant for the church is being affected by the outside world. The future (what is outside of the window) is in jeopardy (the rotting frames).
Dream 2
The dreamer can almost taste his desire for glorification to operate in the supernatural but doubts.
Dream 1 & 2
The dreamer is feeling the outside influences of the enemy and it is discouraging him from what he knows is the ultimate destiny for the church. This dreamer, in his humanness, feels responsible for the gap between the old and new and knows there is a cost. He also knows that the power of the one true God releasing His glory is the solution, but senses a great distance between what is currently happening, and what is possible.
Prayer needed
There is much for the Pastor to consider in this dream.
One question that pops up is this.
Is the “Old Way”(old wine skins) of thinking effecting the “New Wine”?
Old wineskins are revitalized and made new by rubbing them with oil. The oil is worked in to make the skins ready to receive the “New Wine”.
Interpretation(preliminary)
I believe this will give a direction for prayer and lead this Pastor to a revelation from Holy Spirit into ALL Truth.
The pastor knows that God’s glory is the answer. He sees that there is a misalignment between the old and new causing a potential weakness. The future is in question (the view from the window) and is causing an undermining, (a rotting) of the vision God has set for this work.
both symbols in this dream are saying the same thing. The rotting wood and the misalignment of old and new.
I would contend that the OLD is the issue here. There is a misalignment because something in the old is affecting the new. I say this because the rot is not from the new.
What is “the old church” hanging on to. Are there agreements, curses, sin or something attached to the prior ministry of this “old church” that is not coming into alignment?
Old Wineskins
There is a process to refurbishing the old wine skin which involves oil. Old wineskins are brittle and unable to handle the new wine. There are a few scriptures that will shed some light on this.
Scriptures
I found two references to “old wineskins” in the bible. One is attached to deception and the other rigidness or being unable to accept anything new.
The first is in the Old Testament in the book of Joshua when the Gibeonites deceived the Israelites saying that they were from a far off land and they showed stale moldy bread and old wineskins as proof.
The second reference is seen in The Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke quoting Jesus about New Wine in Old Wineskins.
Joshua 9:3-5 But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, they worked craftily, and went and pretended to be ambassadors. And they took old sacks on their donkeys, old wineskins torn and mended, old and patched sandals on their feet, and old garments on themselves; and all the bread of their provision was dry and moldy.
Luke 5:37,38 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved.
Matthew 9:17 and Mark 2:22 are likewise, the same quote from Jesus told by the two authors.
Today’s Study
Lets get a better understanding of Windows and things that are rotting.
Windows
Here are a few references that pop into my head when thinking about Biblical references to windows.
David looked out of a window
The spy’s in Jericho escaped out of a window
Daniel prayed 3 times a day and was seen through a window
Noah opened a window and sent out a dove and a raven
Jezebel was thrown out of a window.
Elisha told the King to shoot an arrow out of a window.
A Prophetic meaning can be attached to many of these but I want to focus on the obvious one. Number 6 and Elisha
2 Kings 13:15-17 And Elisha said to him, “Take a bow and some arrows.” So he took himself a bow and some arrows. Then he said to the king of Israel, “Put your hand on the bow.” So he put his hand on it, and Elisha put his hands on the king’s hands. And he said, “Open the east window”; and he opened it. Then Elisha said, “Shoot”; and he shot. And he said, “The arrow of the LORD’s deliverance and the arrow of deliverance from Syria; for you must strike the Syrians at Aphek till you have destroyed them.”
East in the bible represents God’s blessings and Salvation. Elisha is having the King make a prophetic declaration using a prophetic act. The act of shooting east is calling on God for deliverance from Syria. The window is symbolic of the future.
Rot
Hosea 5:12 tells us that rottenness causes weakness.
Hosea 5:12 I will destroy Israel as a moth consumes wool. I will make Judah as weak as rotten wood.
Habakkuk 3:16 warns of a coming invasion and the fear bringing on rottenness to the bones
Habakkuk 3:16 When I heard, my body trembled; My lips quivered at the voice; Rottenness entered my bones; And I trembled in myself, That I might rest in the day of trouble. When he comes up to the people, He will invade them with his troops.
Isaiah 5:22 Warns that rejecting the law of the Lord will bring rottenness to their root.
Isaiah 5:22 Therefore, as the fire devours the stubble, And the flame consumes the chaff, So their root will be as rottenness, And their blossom will ascend like dust; Because they have rejected the law of the LORD of hosts, And despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
The Hosea reference speaks of rotting wood so this one fits our dream.
There could have easily been a rotten foundation in the dream which would point to the Isaiah scripture.
Or a reference to bones aching in conjunction with the rotten wood and we would lean toward the Habakkuk reference.
The symbolism in dreams is not accidental or Just because there was a need for rottenness to be highlighted in the dream. God did not just say, “Ok, we can make it a window frame.” It was rotten wood and it was a rotten window frame and it means something.
Once again we see that we can spend as much time in scripture as we want and still find more information and revelation into what things can mean in dreams. This is part of seeking.
I look forward to a followup with this Pastor to see how the Lord leads him.
Next week we will attempt to summarize what we learned in the first few issues of our journey so far.
